Thingaha Gender Working Group, which is a local group is mainly working on Gender Issues and Gender Equality was formed by gender concerned person in 2003 after having a series of meetings and discussions started on February 25, 2003 with the initiative of Swissaid- Myanmar Office, is a national gender organization working for grassroots women's empowerment and social justice in Myanmar.
Gender equality and partnership are the basic requirements for building a more just society. Violence Against Women (VAW) and Gender Based Violence (GBV) are basically an abuse of human rights but not always recognized as such and it is widespread. It is an injustice. If we want a more just society then it is we men and women who have an invested interest in it.
Over the past (13) years, TGWG has been working on Gender Awareness Training, Gender TOT, Gender Analysis Workshop and Survey, Modular Training Course on Gender and Development, Capacity Building for Local Partner Organizations(CBLPO), humanitarian response in 2008 aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, and gender integration in Livelihoods Recovery in Cyclone Nargis affected area in Delta.
In order to expand its Programs and Services in humanitarian and development work, the founding members of TGWG have made the decision to rename TGWG after holding several meetings. The decision was made on August 13, 2011 at the EC Meeting held at the Thingaha office , all agreed on January 3, 2012 at the Founding Members’ Meeting and renamed as “Thingaha Organization”. Therefore, on January 26, 2013, we conducted annually Founding Members Meeting. In this meeting, all staff and Founding Members agreed to change renamed as "Thingaha Gender Organization" which new name is more visible for us as a Gender Focus Organization.
